UNDP to build 4,500 more houses for Sidr victims
UNDP has taken a plan to construct 4500 more disaster-resilient houses for badly affected people in eleven Sidr-hit districts in the south-western region by December 31 this year.
DFID of UK, Swiss Development Corporation and UNDP, Bangladesh provided Tk 170 crore fund for implementation of relief and rehabilitation programme in the area, said a press release issued by UNDP's local field team leader Md Asaduzzaman yesterday.
UNDP as part of emergency response programme provided food and non-food assistance for 89,145 families in the badly affected districts.
UNDP also supported construction of 9,145 cyclone-resilient houses for most needy and vulnerable families and completed community restoration (cash-for-work) programme that generated work opportunity for 80,000 affected families.
At a daylong workshop on implementation of Sidr response and recovery programme organised by UNDP at a local hotel yesterday, speakers stressed the need for courage to combat disasters and ability of partner NGOs, local administration and stakeholders to respond quickly to relief and recovery operations.
Additional Commissioner of Khulna division M Abdus Samad was present as chief guest at the workshop presided over by Khulna Deputy Commissioner Ziaul Alam.
