Boy freed on ransom payment
A three-year-old boy was freed by abductors on receipt of Tk 1 lakh as ransom paid by his father at Harinagar ferry ghat Monday night.
Pappu, son of Golok Chandra was abducted by a gang of pirates from his house at Purba Kalinagar village near Sundarbans in Shyamnagar upazila Saturday night, police said. They demanded Tk 1 lakh as ransom from the boy's father in exchange of his release. They also set a deadline of five days for payment of ransom failing which they threatened to kill the boy, sources said.
Golok Chandra informed Shyamnagar police who conducted several drives in the Sundarbans to rescue the boy but failed, police said.
On failure, Golok contacted the pirates and paid them the ransom money through a former Union Parishad member in Jessore town on Monday, police said. Later, pirates set Pappu free.
When contacted, Shyamnagar Police Station officer-in-charge Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident.
