Jamat-e-Islami Ameer Moulana Matiur Rahman Nizami yesterday said a neutral and fair election can not be expected under the present Chief Election commissioner. Even then the people are prepared to go for polls to save democracy, he said. The CEC has made his position clear by saying about presenting a 1970-like polls. “That (1970 polls) was an election of only Awami League as other parties did not participate”, Nizami claimed. The caretaker government should take immediate steps so that national election is held on schedule, he added. Nizami was addressing a gathering organised by his party at Kanaighat Upazila headquarters yesterday. It was also addressed by, among others, former lawmaker Farid Uddin Chwdhury, former Sylhet city Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman, its city unit chief Ehsanul Mahbub Zobayer. The Jamaat chief said the nation will face a serious crisis if the election is not held in time.
