Traditional Katyani festival begins in Magura today

All are set to celebrate five-day-long traditional Katyani festival that starts in the district from today. The festival, held every year after about a month of Durga Puja, the greatest religious festival of the Bangla-speaking Hindus, Katyani Puja has emerged as the most celebrated festival for the community in the district. Shatish Chandra, a rich man of Parnanduali village in Magura Sadar upazila, first introduced Katyani Puja 56 years ago at the courtyard of his residence. Over the past several years, the puja has gained immense popularity and this time it is going to be celebrated at 56 mandaps in Magura, organisers said. Every year thousands of people irrespective of religion, even from abroad including India and Nepal, assemble here to celebrate the festival. In observance of the festival nicely decorated gates and arches have been erected at the entrance of different puja mandaps and the areas have also been illuminated. A month-long fair has also been arranged on the occasion.
