Satkhira AL demands party men in all four JS seats
Satkhira district Awami League (AL) at an extended meeting yesterday demanded nomination of party men from all four constituencies in the district in December 18 parliamentary election.
AL leaders said party candidates who ran second with small margins in all the constituencies in last election have bright prospects to win this time because they gained more public support due to the immediate past government's failure and corruption and because party organisations are stronger than before compared to their polls rivals BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Patry.
The meeting resolved that party men will resist if nomination goes to candidates of smaller parties in the name of 'grand alliance'.
The meeting also urged party high-ups not to nominate such alliance candidates who got less than 2500 votes in 2001 election.
Hinting to smaller partners' demand of nomination, speakers at the meeting said they will not 'surrender' any of the seats to them in the name of a grand alliance. These parties can not demand any seat as they do not have committees or workers at grassroots level, the leaders claimed, saying they will not accept candidature of any person of other smaller parties in the grand alliance.
The AL meeting also announced that an agitation programme including rally, human chain will be announced if AL men are not nominated in all four constituencies.
The AL leaders also called upon the people to unite to resist any conspiracy by any quarter to foil the December 18 polls. A campaign against war criminals has been launched in the country and they may hatch up any conspiracy to boycott or foil the election, the leaders said.
Trial of war criminals is now a demand of the nation as this is necessary to establish rule of law and uphold the spirit of Liberation War, they said.
They also demanded that corrupt people are not nominated by any party, vowing to create public opinion against them.
Demanding unconditional and permanent release of AL chief Sheikh Hasina, the leaders said this will prove the caretaker government's neutrality.
A free, fair and credible election can not be held without participation of a freed Sheikh Hasina.. They said 1/11 is the outcome of massive corruption by four-party alliance government and their lust for power.
Chaired by district AL president Engineer Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the meeting held at Pourasava auditorium was addressed by, among others, former AL lawmakers Monsur Ahmed, Dr Mokhlesur Rahman and AK Fazlul Haque.
On contact, district AL secretary Alhaj Nazrul Islam said after the meeting that the grand alliance will lose the four seats if candidates are nominated from smaller parties.
