Ershad declares AL man as JP candidate in Dinajpur

Our Correspondent, Dinajpur
Jatiya Party chief Hossain Mohammad Earshad yesterday announced Awami League member Md. Delwar Hossain as his party's candidate from Dinajpur-6 constituency in December 18 parliamentary election. Delwar, a long time member of AL and chairman of Kushdaha Union Parishad for 36 years, expressed surprise at Ershad's announcement made at a way side meeting. Md. Delwar Hosain is a member of Nawabganj Upazla AL. Talking to this correspondent over phone, Delwar said he is in Dhaka lobbying for AL nomination from Dinajpur-6 (Hakimpur, Nawabganj, Ghoraghat and Birampur). He expressed his surprises when this correspondent told him that Ershad declared his name as a JP candidate. “I am an Awami League member for long. If people want me why should I go to Jatiya Party for ticket”. He said he does not know anything about it and had no talk either with Ershad or any JP leader. Earshad made the announcement at a wayside meeting on way to Dhaka from Dinajpur yesterday afternoon. During his 14-minute speech Ershad said his party will nominate three persons each from Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts. But he did not name any of the candidates except Delwar. He urged local JP leaders to find out candidates. The JP chief however claimed that his party will win 19 seats in greater Rangpur in the coming election. In January 22, 2006 planned election, Delwar sought AL nomination but AL led grand alliance nominated Dr. Azizul Haque Chowdhury. The election was not held.
