AL in 3 dists demands party candidates in JS polls
Panels of nomination seekers from Khagrachhari, Pabna sent to central body
Awami League units in Khagrachhari and Pabna at meetings yesterday selected panels of nomination seekers and demanded fielding of party candidates in the upcoming parliament election.
In Sirajganj, AL leaders demanded nomination of party men in all six constituencies in the district.
In Khagrachhari, Awami League and its front organisations yesterday elected five persons for nomination, reports our correspondent.
The five candidates are -- district Awami League Secretary Mohammad Zahedul Alam who bagged 79 votes, district AL Vice-president Kujendra Lal Tripura (60 votes), Vice President Rono Bikrom Tripura (40 votes), Press Secretary Prof Samir Datta Chakma (36 votes) and district AL President Zatindra Lal Tripura (30 votes).
Meanwhile, three district AL advisors -- Dousta Muhammad Chowdhury, Mohammad Nurunnabi Chowdhury and former lawmaker Alim Ullah -- who faced 'no confidence' from district AL Before the election, were not allowed to cast their votes due to their involvement with Samo Adhikar Andolon, a regional organisation working for 'equal rights' in CHT.
All eight candidates said in presence of around thousand party leaders and activists that they will express solidarity with the person who would be finally selected as AL candidate by the party's central committee.
Rejecting the result, district AL Advisor Nurunnabi Chowdhury said, “Awami League is a democratic party. How can an election be held dropping the three advisors from voter list?”
Our Pabna correspondent reports: AL grass roots level leaders yesterday voted for party candidates in Pabna-2 (Sujanagar upazila) constituency where Sector Commanders Forum leader Air vice Marshal (retd) AK Khondoker got the highest 315 votes.
Other persons elected for nomination are -- Bangladesh Krishak League President Mirza Abdul Jalil (120 votes), Dr Mojibar Rahman (107 votes), Ahmed Firoz Kabir (85 votes) and Brig Zia Hannan Sheley (78 votes).
AL men elected in Pabna-5 are -- district AL Organizing secretary Golam Faruk Prince (215 votes), former MP Wazi Uddin Khan (192), Pabna disrict AL Secretary Shamsul Haque Tuku (80), central AL leader Ismail Hossain (68), district AL Vice-president Md Saidul Haque Chunnu (64).
A meeting held at Chatmohar upzila (Pabna-3 constituency) selected Maqbul Hossain, Nazma Rahman, Shamsiddin Khabir and Shakhawat Hossain as party candidates for nomination by central AL leaders.
At a meeting held in Santhia upazila with Rezaur Rahim Lal, vice president of Pabna district unit AL in the chair declared Prof Abu Sayeed as the AL candidate from Pabna-1 (Santhia-Bera upazila) constituency.
Earlier another meeting was held at Ishwardi upazila unit AL office where grass root level leaders demanded former lawmaker Samsur Rahman Sarif Dilu as the AL candidate in Pabna-4 (Ishwardi and Atghoria upazilas) constituency.
Our Nilphamari correspondent reports: Grass roots level leaders and workers of Nilphamari district Awami League yesterday unanimously selected former lawmaker and central AL Publicity Secretary Asaduzzaman Noor as the party candidate from Nilphamari-2 constituency.
In Satkhira, leaders and activists of Tala upazila Awami League in Satkhira-1 (Tala-Kalaroa) constituency at an extended meeting yesterday demanded nomination of a party man in the constituency for December 18 parliamentary election, reports our Satkhira correspondent.
At the meeting on the premises of Tala Women's College, the grass root level leaders chose district AL President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the AL candidate from the constituency, party sources said.
Workers Party (WP) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), two allies of AL-led possible grand alliance, are also demanding alliance ticket from the constituency.
Former AL lawmaker BM Nazrul Islam is also an aspirant for party nomination to contest from the seat.
Our Sirajganj Correspondent adds: Sirajganj Sadar upazila Awami League in an extended meeting yesterday demanded nomination of party men from all six constituencies in the district for the upcoming parliament election.
If unpopular leaders get ticket under the banner of grand alliance, it will pose risk of losing the seats, they said making an oblique reference to a few Jatiya Party leaders who are seeking 'grand alliance' ticket from different seats in the district.
