Terrorist attack in Mumbai

This latest attack is terrible and needs to be condemned by all sane people. Having said that, an analysis of the problem is also required by sane minds. The primary reason for terrorism in the world-- be it in India, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, or Sri Lanka etc-- is for control of territory or creation of a State, and has nothing to do with establishing supremacy of one religion over another. Once such control of territory is established we have secondary terrorism between the sects of the same religion, or majority versus minority conflicts within the same territory ( Taliban type versus moderate Muslims or other minority; Shia v, Sunni, or say revivalist Hindus v. secular Hindus, or Muslims etc). Obviously, terrorism in India where so called 'Islamic terrorists' are involved is about the control of Kashmir and India can defuse the situation by taking recourse to UN Resolutions and be the pacifist leader of a secular world.

Indian officials and analysts are already pointing the finger at Pakistan. This is not a response to any "preliminary evidence". After every bomb blast, the Indians blame either Bangladesh or Pakistan, but never come up with any proof. The world media is ignoring the fact that India has perhaps the greatest number of insurgent groups for any country- Kashmiri separatists, Naxalites, rebels in Assam, etc. Jayeed Naseeree, The Aga Khan School, Dhaka

I have no language to condemn the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. When I am writing this letter, Indian television channels are screening the live fighting between the law enforcers and the terrorists. Islam is a peace loving religion. Islam itself means peace. How do the terrorists kill innocent people in the name of Islam? Actually, terrorists do not have any religion. They are the enemies of mankind. Some days ago terrorists destroyed a five star hotel in Pakistan. We also saw attacks by Bangla Bhai and his group (JMB) two years back in our country. Everywhere they killed many innocent people and certainly it is against the spirit of Islam. No religion can endorse this kind of inhuman acts. Recently in India, a Muslim organisation named Darul Uloom Deoband issued a fatwa against terrorism in the name of Islam. During Bangla Bhai's attacks many Islamic scholars in our country condemned such killings. Flawed religious education instigates youths to take such a path. We must teach our young ones the essence of Islam. May Allah bless us. Harun-or-Rashid, Sobhanbag, Dhaka

I am greatly shocked at what happened in Mumbai. A group of terrorists committed massacre. Several hundreds were also injured. It is an attack on humanity in the name of religion. The terrorists claimed themselves to be Islamic extremists. But we should understand that a terrorist is a terrorist. They do not belong to any religious community. Terrorists are using religion as a shield. In Mumbai, they killed innocent people which Islam does not approve of. We are also watching the rise of fundamentalists in our county. We must be careful about them because whoever the attackers are the sufferers will be the same common people. Manik Chowdhury, On e-mail
