Meeting of the two
Defying the incomprehensible and unrealistic ego, Sk. Hasina Wajed and Begum haleda Zia, who have long been known to be the inhabitants of two opposite poles, came face to face and exchanged greetings. This apparently positive attitude could well be the ginning of a new political culture in this country. They should pledge to continue a healthy elationship based on respect and tolerance for each other and show signs of political and mental maturity. These virtues have remained unfamiliar to them. The dagger's end rel-ationship between the top leadership has not only distanced the two political parties but has also created animosity, hatred and intolerance among the field level workers and ordinary supporters as well. If this good neighbourly gesture between Mrs. Wajed and Mrs. Zia is confined to exchange of greetings and sharing of home made delicacies alone, I don't think any remarkable qualitative change is going to happen regarding democratisation of political system of this country.
Al the efforts of so called 1/11 and its aftermath will become eaningless. Fortunately or unfortunately, we the people of this country are dependant on ''vote based democracy'', perhaps initiated by successive military regimes which formed political parties in order to consolidate their power and became the torch bearer of democracy overnight. They retained their autocratic attitude by not introducing accountability and transparency within the parties and governance of the state. These political parties, while in power, have used this attitude to their full advantage and deprived the people of the fruits of democracy and welfare of the people remained a matter of tertiary importance to them. I think enough damage has been done to the political system of this country. This country and its people could not withstand any more political crisis of catastrophic extent. Our political parties must now reorganise and restructure themselves conforming to the needs of the day and shed attitudes incompatible to democratic norms, so that their credence as democratic political parties could be restored. I hope a new era will usher in.
