Four contenders still face corruption, criminal cases

Parliamentary election candidates in Chapainawabganj-1 and Chapainawabganj-3 constituencies include at least four who are still accused in different corruption and criminal cases. The four are former lawmaker and district BNP president Shahjahan Ali in Chapainawabganj-1 (Shibganj); former lawmaker and BNP secretary Harunur Rashid, former lawmaker and district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Latifur Rahman and Sramik League leader Abdul Wadud in Chapainawabganj-3. Lutfur Rahman is also a member of majlish-e-surah (central working committee) of Jamaat. Shahjahan Mia in his affidavit stated that he is still accused in five cases for graft, extortion and cheating. One of his cases is under trial in Chapainawabganj Judicial Magistrate Court and four others are stayed by the High Court. Harunur Rashid is accused in three criminal cases for graft and extortion. All the cases have been stayed by the High Court. Harun filed nomination paper in Chapainawabgan-3 constituency. Abdul Wadud Biswas, contestant in Chapainawabganj- 3, is accused in criminal cases. One of the cases is stayed by Chapainawabganj Judicial Magistrate Court and the other by the High Court. Latifur Rahman of the same constituency is accused in a criminal case filed with Sadar police station in 1988 under section 147,148,448,302,427,109,149 of Penal Code and Explosives Act. The case has been stayed by the appellate division of Supreme Court.
