3 injured in Thakurgaon poll violence

At least three persons including a woman were injured in attack on BNP men by opponent Awami League activists at two villages in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila on Thursday night. The incident took place during and election meeting at Mujabunni cluster village under Debipur union in Sadar upazila, said Debipur union parishad Chairman Nur Islam and police sources. “When we were in an election meeting at the house of Azir Uddin, Awami League activists attacked us, injuring Azir Uddin and Banu Begum. As other BNP men left the scene and took shelter in the adjacent village, the AL activists chased them and asked the villagers to hand over me to them,” said BNP leader Rezwanul Haque Abu. The AL activists also damaged 15 motorcycles of BNP activists, Abu said. When contacted, Awami League leader advocate Mostaq Alam Tulu told this correspondent, “The BNP men entered the village and started distributing money, violating electoral rules. Hearing the news, Awami League activists with the help of local people resisted them.” “As a group of Awami League activists riding motorcycles were passing through the village, Anisur Rahman chanted slogan 'dhaner shis'. Angered, the AL activists beat him," Nargun union parishad Chairman Sayed Poigam Ali said.
