Tangail AL men worried over multiple candidacy in upazilas

Activists and supporters of Awami League (AL) in Tangail are confused over the candidature in the upcoming upazila election on January 22 as more than one party leaders are contesting for chairman post in different upazilas in the district. Following instructions from the party high command, the grassroots leaders and activists of AL earlier elected chairman candidates through their votes in different upazilas but other candidates did not withdraw their candidature so far, party sources said. Similar situation prevails over the candidature for the posts of male vice-chairman and female vice-chairman, they added. Meantime, district AL has expelled 11 upazila level leaders in last few days for running in the election in violation of the party decision and for working against the party selected candidates, said press releases singed by Fazlur Rahman Faruque, general secretary of Tangail district unit AL. The 'temporarily' expelled persons are: Upazila chairman candidates and general secretary of Dhanbari upazila AL Abdul Wadud Sabuj Talukder and publication secretary Monjurul Islam Tapan; Nagarpur upazila chairman candidate and assistant secretary of a central sub-committee of AL Tarek Shams Khan Himu, organising secretary of upazila AL Motiur Rahman Moti, members of the advisory board of upazila AL Sheikh Abdur Rahim Ilias and Sidur Rahman; chairman candidate and general secretary of Basail upazila AL Fazlul Haque Jamaddar, organising secretary Abdus Sattar Jamaddar and general secretary of Kashil union AL Saraj Miah; upazila chairman candidate and senior leader of Modhupur upazila AL Abdul Gafur Montu; and member of the Sadar upazila unit AL Selim Miah. In Ghatail upazila, four local AL leaders -- Azmal Hossain, Shahidul Islam Lebu, Nazrul Islam Khan Saju and Abdul Kaddus Talukder -- are contesting for the chairman post as attempt to field single candidate for the upazila failed, party sources said. In Bhuapur upazila, grassroots AL leaders and activists have elected advocate Abdul Halim as the chairman candidate for the upazila. But two other local AL leaders -- Amirul Islam Talukder and Masudul Haque Masud are yet to withdraw their candidature. The AL leaders contesting in the upazila election may lose in several upazilas in the district as there are more than one candidates from the party, party insiders said.
