'Land grabber' in UZ polls race

An alleged land grabber is contesting the upcoming upazila election in Sadar upazila. Introducing himself as a leader of Krisak Shramik Janata League, Ataur Rahman Babu is visiting door to door urging voters to elect him the vice-chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad. A former municipal commissioner, Babu, in his affidavit, declared that he or his wife do not posses any land or shop. But Babu has a beauty parlour housed in three shops built on land of Janokinath Government Primary School on Nilphamari-Saidpur highway. The shops were given to him on rent last year, said Headmistress Laila Mozaheda Banu. While taking possession of the shops, Babu broke boundary wall of the school and declared ownership on the school land as well as the shops, she said. School management committee lodged a complaint with the Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner and investigation found the allegation true. Additional deputy commissioner Maloy Kumar Roy told newsmen that a notice had been sent to Babu to leave the land but he sought injunction through a court. Babu said his father owned the land who has filed a case challenging the eviction order.
