Dozens hurt, 37 houses damaged in Jhenidah

Dozens of people including 15 women were injured as criminals vandalised 37 houses at Bamonile, Digerpara and Jitor villages in Jhenidah Sadar upazila on Sunday night as a sequel to tension over January 22 upazila election. The clash started first at Jitor village as tension was prevailing between the supporters of elected Jhenidah Sadar upazila Chairman Kanak Kanti Das and Harun-or-Rashid, both leaders of Awami League, locals said. Later, Harun's supporters got together and attacked the houses of the loyalists of Kanak Kanti Das in the three villages. The attackers beat up man, women and children, and looted goods after vandalising corrugated iron sheets, fences, cooking pots and tube-wells. In the face of atrocities by the attackers armed with billhooks and sticks, women and children took shelter in the nearby field leaving their houses, Sreepada of Bamonile village said. On information, Rab and police reached the spot and visited the affected villages. Sub-Inspector Sunit Kumar of Sadar Police Station said the situation is under control now.
