UPDF man shown arrested in Capt Gazi killing case

Security personnel on Saturday arrested Sachib Chakma, a member of the central convening committee of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), at Bogachhari village under Naniachar upazila on charges of extortion, abduction and killing. He was yesterday produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent him to jail. Kotwali police said Sachib Chakma, son of Nirayan Chakma of Jatramoni Karbari Para under Naniachar upazila, was wanted in seven cases, including two for murder, filed with Kotwali and Naniachar police stations. Sachib was shown arrested in Captain Gazi murder case and an abduction case, police said. Captain Gazi was killed during a gunfight between Parbatya Chattgram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) at Naniachar on December 27, 2006. Gazi along with a team of security personnel went to Naniarchar on information of an armed clash between the two rival groups and was caught in crossfire. Immediately after the incident, a murder case was filed with Naniachar Police station accusing 45 people, including Sachib Chakma. He had been absconding since the filing of the murder case. Shantidev Chakma, leader of UPDF Rangamati unit, yesterday condemned the arrest of their central committee member and demanded his immediate release.
