AL cadres attack contractors in Satkhira: 5 hurt

At least five contractors were injured as cadres of Awami League (AL) and its associate organisations attacked them when they went to drop tenders at Satkhira Zila Parishad office in connection with renovation of three district council dak bungalows and leasing out 51 ponds. Local AL leader Momin, district Chhatra League (BCL) General Secretary Asaduzzaman Lithu, Swechchhasebak League joint convenor Bedar Hossain Bablu, Lutfar Rahman and Mukul took control of the boxes for tender dropping at the zila parishad office in the morning, witnesses said. As a few contractors approached near the tender boxes ignoring threats by the political persons, the latter swooped on them. Five contractors including Akram Hossain Bappi and Abdus Salam were injured during the incident, they said. Some 210 tenders were sold for renovation of the dak bungalows and 471 tenders were for leasing out 51 ponds, zila parishad office sources said. But only three of the 210 sold tenders were dropped for renovation of buildings and 147 of 471 tenders were dropped for leasing out of ponds. On contact, Satkhira Zila Parishad Executive Officer Mohammad Gaus confirmed the incident.
