Hajee Danesh university locked as 8 students punished

A section of students of Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) yesterday kept the administrative and academic buildings under lock and key for three hours from 8:00am protesting disciplinary action taken by the authorities against eight students of the university. The authorities yesterday punished the students belonging to semester-2 for assaulting the students of semester-1 at Ziaur Rahman Hall on January 23. Of them, studentship of Md Kashedul Kanak has been suspended for six months while the rest seven--SM Kamruzzamam, Sumon Sarker, ATM Sadequr Rahman, Fahim Ahmed, Mostafa Kamal, Md Sajahan Ali Sarker and Sharier Pipul-- have been expelled from their dormitories for six months. Protesting the action, the students of semester-2 locked the two buildings and took away the keys. Being informed, police went to the campus at around 11:00am and broke open the locked doors of the buildings. University sources said two students groups--semester-1 and semester-2 had a scuffle over seats on the university bus on the campus on January 23. After the incident, the students of semester -2 gathered at Ziaur Rahman Hall and swooped on the students of semester-1, leaving at least seven injured. The injured were admitted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital and one of them, Anirban Saha, a student of computer science and engineering, was shifted to DMCH as his condition deteriorated. On January 25, the university authorities formed a one-member committee to probe the incident. Following submission of the report and recommendation by the probe body, the authorities held a meeting on January 27 and decided to punish the students responsible for the incident. Yesterday morning, the authorities hung a notice at the administrative building, announcing punishment of the eight students of semester-2.
