28 injured as AL, BNP men clash in Sirajganj

At least 28 people were injured, four of them critically, in a clash between the supporters of Awami League and BNP at Baoitara Bazar in Sirajganj Sadar upazila yesterday morning over construction of a road. Police and witnesses said the clash erupted at around 10:30am, when local influential people sat in a meeting at Baoitara Bazar to settle a long-standing dispute between the supporters of AL and BNP over construction of Mohonpur-Baoitara road. At one stage, the supporters of the two parties had an altercation that led to a fierce clash between them. They used lethal weapons and hurled brickbats at each other during the clash that lasted for one and a half hours, leaving 28 people from both sides injured. The clashing groups also ransacked eight shops and two houses at the bazar On information, Police from Sirajganj Sadar Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed at the bazaar to avert any further incident. The injured were admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital and different clinics in the town. Of them, condition of four was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
