Gaibandha awaits bumper potato

Despite some problems due to chilly and foggy weather, potato farmers in Gaibandha district are expecting high yield in the current crop season. Farmers in the district have already started reaping early variety of the winter vegetable. Cultivation target in this season was met as potato was cultivated on 10,225 hectares of land in seven upazilas of Gaibandha district, deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the district said. To achieve production target of one lakh tonne of potato, DAE provided potato growers with all sorts of help, including supply of high yielding variety seeds, fertiliser and pesticide. Bank loans were also given for its smooth cultivation. This time potato growers are widely using natural fertiliser and herbal pesticides to get more production. During a visit to Tarapur union in Sunderganj upazila, this correspondent saw farmers spraying pesticide to check worm and diseases in vast areas of potato field. “We are getting good result of using herbal pesticide,” said labourers working in a crop field at Tarapur. The farmers of Sundarganj, Sadullapur and Gobindaganj upazilas have expressed optimism about good yield this season. “I expect over hundred maunds of potato production per bigha in this crop season,” said Azizar of village Chachia Mirganj in Sundarganj upazila. “Pests and diseases, not foggy weather, are major problem for potato cultivation. This time measures have been taken to check the two enemies of potato,” said Sadullapur Upazila Agriculture Officer Obaidur Rahman.
