A number of political and socio-cultural organisations of Rangpur formed a human chain at Rangpur Press Club yesterday to protest a move to establish a children's park on the land owned by a 6-member family of physically challenged. The leaders of the organisations criticised Rangpur municipality chairman for the 'inhuman' decision and blamed a local Jatiya Party (JP) leader for influencing the authorities. The proposed land adjoins JP chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad's residence 'Palli Nibash' at Darshana. Six disabled members of the family were present at the human chain programme. They also held a protest meeting there after the human chain programme. Gono-Forum president of Rangpur unit Anwar Hossain, Secretary of Gonatantri Party Arshad Hossain, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD-Khalequzzan) district co-coordinator Abdul Quddus, secretary of Disabled Foundation Mihir Chandra Howlader spoke at the meeting. Arshad Hossain said there were many khas lands in Rangpur town. The chairman could have asked the Deputy Commissioner (DC) to sanction a plot to set up a children's park. Moreover, the proposed site of the children's park is 4 kilometre away from Rangpur town and so most children from the main town would not be able to go there, he pointed out. Anwar Hossain said the JP leader influenced the authorities to set up the park beside 'Polli Nibash' to please Ershad and get his wife nominated for the reserved seat of parliament. Sirajul Islam, a member of the disabled family said, “Our family does not have any other land except for the house on 22 decimals of land at Darshana.”
