Five language veterans honoured in Rajshahi
Ekushey Book Fair began here yesterday through reception to five Language Movement veterans and unveiling covers of two books.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and the district administration jointly organised the eight-day fair on the RCC premises.
Language Movement veterans Golam Arif Tipu, Sayeed Uddin Ahmed, M Abul Hossain, Abdur Razzak and Mosharraf Hossain Akhunjee were accorded reception at the inaugural ceremony with Shefaul Karim, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi, in the chair.
Covers of 'Ekusher Kotha', a book written by local journalist Abu Saleh M Fattah and 'Land Laws of Bangladesh' written by Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan were unveiled at the ceremony.
Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton formally inaugurated the fair. Fazle Hossain Badsha MP and Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan were, present, among others.
Mayor Liton said initiatives for preserving historical facts of the Language Movement in Rajshahi as well as memoirs written by the language veterans who are still alive would be taken soon.
The fair will continue through February 28 and discussions on various aspects of local history and culture will be held at the fair followed by cultural programmes.
