28 hurt as sacked Milk Vita staff clash with police
At least 28 people, including five policemen, were injured as dismissed workers and employees of Milk Vita Company Limited clashed with police at Baghabari of Sirajganj yesterday.
They also ransacked office rooms of the officials and damaged some valuable documents.
Local sources said the trouble began at around 11:30am when police prevented the demonstrators from holding a rally in front of the factory demanding their reinstatement.
The workers and employees had been sacked during the rule of the caretaker government.
At one stage, the jobless staff went berserk and started hurling brickbats at the law enforcers. As the situation went out of control, police charged batons on the agitators and fired blank shots.
At least 28 people, including five policemen, were injured during the clash that lasted for about two hours.
Hearing the news, local AL leaders rushed to the spot and helped to bring the situation under control.
The injured policemen are Shahzadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tozammel Haque, sub-inspectors Belal Hossain, Kamruzzaman, Kamrul Islam and constable Adbul Aziz.
The injured were admitted to Shahzadpur Upazila Health Complex, Sirajganj Sadar Hospital and Pabna Sadar Hospital.
A tense situation is prevailing in the area following the clash. Additional police have been deployed to avert further untoward incident.
The demonstrators alleged that the authorities concerned sacked about 400 workers and employees of the company illegally during the rule of the caretaker government.
