Stabbing of a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) near Kajla gate of Rajshahi University by unidentified youths on Thursday night, sparked tension over the campus yesterday. The BCL leader, Arifuzzaman Roni, legal affairs secretary of BCL RU unit, was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in a critical condition. Campus sources said some unidentified youth intercepted Roni at the gate when he was returning to the campus riding a motorbike at around 7:30pm. They stabbed Roni, hit him on the head with Pepsi bottle and left the scene. Hearing the news, BCL activists took out a procession on the campus and tried to block Dhaka-Rajshahi highway. The BCL men had to go back to the campus as police interfered. Yesterday, the BCL activists, equipped with sharp weapons, hockey sticks and iron rods, staged a demonstration on the campus demanding immediate arrest of the people responsible for stabbing their leader. A large number of police have been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident. When contacted, the officer-incharge of Motiher Police Station said police have started investigation into the incident and are trying to arrest the attackers.
