IU teachers begin class boycott as deadline ends

Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) yesterday started class boycott programme as the authorities concerned did not pay heed to its demand for appointing a new vice-chancellor (VC). Earlier IUTA had given a 10 days' deadline for appointing a vice-chancellor. It also threatened to launch a tougher movement if the demand was not met within the deadline, which ended on Monday. According to IUTA leaders, the university teachers will continue class boycott for two hours from 10:00am to 12:00 noon until March 5 and announce fresh agitation programme on March 7. Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Foyez Mohammad Serajul Haque resigned on January 15 and since then the university is running without VC. Campus sources said before tendering resignation, VC issued a written order asking treasurer Prof Anwarul Haq to carry out his (VC's) duties for 15 days as per rules of the university. But the assignment period expired on January 30. In absence of the vice-chancellor, huge works remain pending with different sections of the university, as they need final approval of the VC for disposal. Examinations in most of the departments have been postponed while publication of exam results of at least 20 departments stopped. IUTA General Secretary Prof Abu Sina has urged the prime minister, also the chancellor of the university, to immediately appoint a vice-chancellor to run the university smoothly.
