7 yrs over, killers yet to be brought to justice

Tofayel Ahmed Tuhin
Seven years after the killing of local Jubo League leader Tofayel Ahmed Tuhin, trial of the murder case is going on in snail's pace while nine accused in the case have remained absconding. Tofayel Ahmed Tuhin, 28, son of Khaibar Sardar of village Kismat Elishpur in Kalaroa upazila and president of Keralkata union Jubo League, was killed near his house on January 26 in 2002 in a bomb attack by criminals. Tuhin, a fish trader, was returning home from Chittagong. Tuhin's uncle Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case with Kalaroa Police Station accusing nine people. Mosharraf told local journalists at Satkhira Press Club yesterday that a local BNP leader sheltered the eight accused other than one Mofa and police did not arrest them. On September 28 in 2003, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, Golam Sarowar Mia, inspector of Detective Branch of police, submitted charge sheet against the nine accused -- Bahauddin, Mofa, Rafiqul, Alam, Mahir Uddin, Isar Ali, Sohrab Hossain, Ala Uddin and Mafizul Islam. Mofa obtained bail from the High Court but he is now on the run while all other accused have remained absconding since the incident, said police and court sources. Killers of Tuhin are pressing to withdraw the case and giving death threats to his family and witnesses, plaintiff Mosharraf Hossain told this correspondent over cell phone yesterday.
