A girder of under-construction bridge across Khairabad River in Barisal district collapsed on Thursday night. The girder connecting pillars No 9 and 10 of the bridge across Khairabad River fell on the ground as it was misplaced, said Jewel Shah Kabir Shahin, chief coordinator of the Kirtankhola-Khairabad Bridges Construction Project. Under the project, two-lane 1390 metres-long 'segmented box girder type' bridge across Kirtonkhola and 274 metre-long 'pre-stressed concrete girder' bridge across Khairabad River with 4.3 kilometre-long approach roads are being constructed at Dapdapia and Khairabad points. “The incident will not hamper construction of the bridge as the girder will be replaced very soon. It is an accident. This type of accident is not unusual,” he said.
