10 charge-sheeted for killing mother, four daughters

Police yesterday submitted charge sheet against 10 people including a suspended police sub-inspector in the case for killing five members of a family in Mehendiganj upazila under the district. Investigation officer of the murder case, Sub-Inspector Abu Al Awal of Mehendiganj Police Station submitted the charge sheet at the court of Khademul Kayes, additional chief judicial magistrate in Barisal. The accused are: Shahjahan Boiragi, a suspended SI of police, his brother Shahidul Islam Shahed Boiragi, their relatives Abul Bashar Badsha Khan, Kaiyum Khan, Abdul Karim Howladar, Anis Matubbar, Farhad Hossain Labu, Nazrul Islam Chunnu, Jamal Chowkidar and Sultan Khan. The first two were under custody while Abdul Karim Howladar, also convicted for life-term imprisonment in another case, and the seven others were absconding during submission of the charge sheet. According to the charge sheet, the accused people killed a woman and her four daughters by slitting their throats at Khalisha village under Bhashanchar union of Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal in the early hours of July 1, 2008. The victims were Tanjira Begum, 40, wife of Jahangir Hawlader, and her daughters Anjuman Ara, 16, Sathi, 11, Jannatul, 9, and Ferdousi, 6. Village Defence Party member Jahangir Hossain filed a murder case against unknown people with Mehendiganj Police Station the next day and Tanjila's brothers Shahjahan Siraj Bairagi and Shahidul Islam Bairagi were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the murder.
