Interns of Barisal Veterinary Institute yesterday morning locked the Dean and administrative offices of the institute and besieged their teachers protesting cut in internship allowance, campus sources said. Initially, the allowance was Tk 6,800 per month for each of its 39 interns but it was cut down to 2,500 last month after the institute was turned into a faculty of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU). The interns started agitation on Rahamatpur campus in Babuganj upazila on February 12 protesting the decision. Contacted, AKM Mustafa Zaman, Dean-in-Charge of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and Medicine, said previously the institute was under the ministry of fisheries and livestock. As the University Grants Commission (UGC) is yet to disburse funds for internship allowance the PSTU is giving Tk 2,500 to each intern from its own fund. The UGC will soon refix the internship allowance, the dean said.
