Our Correspondent, Sirajganj
At least 35 people were injured, three of them seriously, in a clash between the activists of Awami League and BNP at Shahzadpur upazila headquarters yesterday. Witnesses said both sides used lethal weapons and hurled brickbats at each other during the clash that continued for one and a half hours. Police charged batons on the clashing groups and fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. Upazila offices of both the parties were also damaged during the clash. Local units of the ruling and opposition parties blamed each other for the incident. AL leaders said the trouble began at around 2:30 pm as some BNP men assaulted an activist of Swechchasebok League in the town. BNP leaders alleged that AL activists first made an attack on its activist at a tea stall. The injured were admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, Shahzadpur Upazila Health Complex and local clinics.
