Police raid student messes near RU to nab outsiders
Police raided private-owned student messes near Rajshahi University (RU) area in search of criminals and 'outsiders' on Thursday night.
During the raid police checked register books of the messes and identity cards of the students residing there but no 'outsiders' were found or arms recovered, police said.
As the RU is scheduled to reopen on June 1 after 80 days of unscheduled closure following March 13 bloody clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir, law enforcers have increased vigilance over a hundred private-owned student messes.
Eight teams from Motiher Police Station took part in Thursday night's raid, mostly in Binodpur, Kazla, Meherchandi and Kathakali areas, police said.
The search, conducted mainly on Shibir-controlled student messes, has been done against the backdrop of the organisation's recent show of strength with a large number of outsiders on the RU campus.
On March 13, the RU authorities closed the university indefinitely following a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir in which Shibir RU Secretary Sharifuzzaman Nomani was killed and 100 people from the two parties were injured.
Police arrested four drug peddlers and seized 40 litres of local-made liquor from Samsadipur near the university on Thursday night.
The arrestees are Ramjan Ali, 35, Shariful Islam, 26, Haman Ali, 25, and Raton, 23.
