Students of Faridpur Medical College (FMC) yesterday boycotted classes and blockaded the road in front of the college demanding solution to different problems including shortage of teachers, power and water crisis, seat shortage in the hostel and irregularities by the authorities. As students kept the main road of the town occupied from 11:00am to 12:00pm, vehicles from both sides got stuck in serious traffic congestion. At a rally held on the highway, the students protested irregular class attendance by teachers and making students victim of 'targeted fail' in the examination for raising reasonable demands. They demanded solving the problem of teacher shortage, water scarcity, power disruption and seat shortage in the hostel. They also demanded a hostel for female students, adequate transport facilities and a speed breaker in front of the college gate. The agitating students said on several occasions they had submitted memorandum to the authorities demanding steps to solve their problems but to no effect. For protesting against the authorities' failure to solve the problems, students often become victim of 'targeted fail' in the examination, they said. The students said they will continue their movement until realisation of their demands. FMC Principal Dr Rafiqul Akhter, Additional Deputy Magistrate Abdul Awal Hawlader, ASP (Headquarters) Monira Sultana, ASP (Sadar Circle) Rafiul Alam, Pourasava Mayor Mahtab Ali Methu, Dr Jahangir Chowdhury Titu and AL leader Khondoker Mohtesham Babar rushed to the spot and persuaded the students to withdraw the blockade by giving assurance to solve the problems.
