122 sued as AL, JP file cases

Awami League (AL) and Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad) yesterday filed two separate cases with Shyamnagar Police Station against 122 leaders and activists of both the partners of the grand alliance for attacking each other at upazila headquarters on May 12. Local AL leader Bappi Kumar Nandi filed a case with the police station accusing 62 local JP leaders and activists of beating up the AL activists, looting and ransacking the shops owned by AL men on the day. The accused include Shyamnagar upazila JP General Secretary Maulana Abdur Rashid, Sadar union JP General Secretary Hasan Mia and local JP lawmaker Golam Reza's nephew Fazlur Rahman Hasan Mia, JP leader and also an accused in the AL case, sued 60 AL men for allegedly ransacking the local JP office and setting fire to three motorbikes parked in front of the office. The accused include Shyamnagar upazila AL Organising Secretary Golam Mostafa Mukul, district Juba League Organising Secretary Abdus Sattar, AL leaders Atiar Rahman, Akbar Kabir, Babu and Akbar Khan. According to police and witnesses, the local units of the two parties clashed at around 6:00pm as JP men were allegedly trying to implicate AL leader Shafiul Azam Lenin in a murder case. Both sides used sticks and sharp weapons during the clash that continued for three hours, leaving 15 people injured. Local JP office was ransacked, three motorbikes parked in front of the office were torched and four shops belonging to the AL men were damaged during the clash. Police fired 71 rubber bullets and tear gas shells and brought the situation under control at around 9:00pm.
