As two more candidates withdrew their candidature yesterday, the last date for withdrawal of nomination, only three are now in the race for Sunamganj by-polls. Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain will attend a meeting at Sunamganj deputy commissioner's office today to discuss the preparations for June 15 by-polls, officials said. As the grand alliance partners decided to put the AL man in the Sunamganj--4 By-election, former JP lawmaker and acting chief of the district committee Abdul Majid withdrew his nomination yesterday. Besides, former lawmaker Dewan Shamsul Abedin also withdrew his candidature the same day. Voters observe that the by-election is likely to witness a major contest only between the AL and BNP candidates. Central JP leaders like Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister GM Quader and Kazi Zafar Ahmed joined the campaign for their candidate Abdul Majid last week. They were almost confident of getting the grand alliance signal since JP's Momtaj Iqbal won the JS seat in December 29 polls. But things got to a major change after JP Secretary General Ruhul Amin Hawlader met the AL chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the capital on Tuesday. AL leaders and activists have strengthened campaign for district AL president Matiur Rahman. Although there exits a long-standing rivalry, the leaders from both factions last week joined campaign for Matiur. Acting General Secretary of the district AL Nurul Huda Mukut and former general secretary Ayub Bakht Zaglu along with some other district leaders met the party chief and prime minister on Thursday last to inform about their campaign in favour of the party candidate. The seat comprising Sunamganj sadar and Biswambharpur upazilas fell vacant following the death of Momtaj Iqbal on April 17.
