RU halls reopen today amid tight security
Classes start June 1
All the 16 residential halls of Rajshahi University (RU) will reopen amid tight security today after 79 days' unscheduled closure following March 13 bloody clashes on the campus.
The classes and examinations will resume on June 1.
Around 300-strong police force including plain-clothes policemen will be deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward incidents on the campus, police said.
The university authorities asked the residential and non-residential students to carry identity cards during their stay on the campus.
Patrol teams of law enforcers will stay at different spots on the campus and students failing to show ID cards will have to face stern action, said RU Proctor Prof Zakaria.
Only residential students will have entrance inside the halls and no guest or non-residential students will be allowed there, the RU proctor said.
RU proctorial body also directed the owners of student messes and private owned rented hostels around the campus to provide the photographs and details of students and other dwellers, campus sources said.
The proctor told newsmen yesterday that closed-circuit television cameras have been installed at different points on the campus, especially male students' dormitories, to prevent outsiders' entrance to halls.
Rajshahi University was closed sine die on March 13 following clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir on the campus that left Shibir leader Nomani killed and 100 others from both sides injured.
