Newborn named Aila

Quazi Amanullah, Khulna
Born at Madinabad cyclone centre in Koira upazila of the district on Thursday morning, she has been named Aila. The child's mother Momena Begum, 36, and her husband Didarul Alam had taken shelter at Madinabad cyclone centre on May 25, the day cyclone Aila accompanied by downpour and tidal surges battered Koira upazila like other areas of the southern region. The couple, who seemed happy at the birth of their child in the face of destruction, said their house at Madinabad village, cows, hens and ducks have been washed away by tidal surges after Aila hit the area. The cyclone had already left most of the sheltered people at the centre homeless, but they celebrated the child's birth amid signs of devastation all around. As they proposed naming the newborn baby Aila, the spouse readily accepted it. But the child and her mother, still deprived of proper medical services, food and drinking water, need to be shifted to hospital for their survival, said Didarul Alam. When asked, Koira Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arif Pasha said he was not aware of the baby's birth at the cyclone centre during the natural calamity. He, however, said necessary steps will be taken for treatment and well-being of the baby and its mother.
