16 BNP men hurt as political rivals foil programme in 3 dists

Sixteen BNP activists were injured as unruly people allegedly belonging to Jubo League and Chhatra League yesterday foiled the programmes arranged on the 28th death anniversary of former president BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in Barisal and Bhola districts. Activists of Jubo League and Chhatra League, who staged a show of strength at Banaripara upazila town in Barisal, ransacked the microbus carrying BNP leader Sarfuddin Ahmed Santu. Santu, a former lawmaker candidate from Barisal-2, was on his way to attend Zia's death anniversary programme scheduled to be held near the upazila agriculture office. Activists of BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal -- Kamal Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Khalilur Rahman Chowkidar, Nannu Mridha, Bablu Mridha, Dr Saidur Rahman and Lal Mia were injured as their political rivals beat them up. The scheduled programmes on Zia's death anniversary at Banarpara was cancelled, said Banaripara municipality BNP Secretary Golam Faruk. Protesting the attack, the BNP activists kept Barisal-Banaripara-Swarupkathi road at Guthia blocked for more than two hours. In Daulatkhan upazila town under Bhola, AL men attacked the BNP programme venue at Uttar Bazar yesterday morning. They burnt tyres, looted and damaged kitchen utensils and the food cooked to feed destitute. Six BNP activists including Rafiq Howladar, Yasin, Shahjahan and Khokan were injured in this attack, said Nazimuddin Howladar, Daulatkhan upazila BNP president. In Lalmohan upazila town of Bhola, AL men attacked injured three BNP men and drove them out of their programme venue near the police station in the morning. Our Staff Correspondent from Rajshahi adds: Four masked motorcycle riders fired a gunshot near the District Council auditorium in Natore town where the local BNP was holding a meeting on the death anniversary of late president Ziaur Rahman yesterday noon, BNP men alleged. Our Magura Correspondent reports: BCL men foiled a discussion programme by Magura district BNP to mark Ziaur Rahman's death anniversary. The attackers who stormed the office on Mokhlesur Rahman Road in the town at around 11:30am, damaged its signboard and furniture. Police team led by Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sagir Mian brought the situation under control.
