48,400 houses, 281km roads destroyed in Khulna district

Cyclone Aila has fully destroyed 48,400 houses and 281 kilometre roads in Khulna district, according to district control room sources. It has partially damaged 46,458 houses and 517 kilometre roads. The sources said ten academic and religious institutions were completely damaged while 250 others partially in the six upazilas affected by May 25 cyclonic. The district administration has so far distributed Tk 32.21 lakh to over five lakh people of 1,11,386 families in the upazilas. The control room sources further said the cyclone has fully damaged crops on 1,854 acres of land in the district. Besides, the calamity has damaged 514-km embankment and two bridges. About 24 tonnes of flattened rice, two and a half tonnes of molasses, two tonnes of fried rice (Muri) and 1,371 tonnes of rice were distributed among the victims, the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Khulna said. Besides, 150 tents, 4,200 water cans, 2,000 pieces of lungis and 3,800 pieces of sarees, 7,000 packets of orsaline packets and 5,000 water purification tablets were also distributed in the affected areas. As many as, 45 medical teams are rendering healthcare services to the cyclone victims. About 66,850 people, including women and children, are still staying in cyclone centres of six upazilas, the ADC said.
