Rajshahi University (RU) reopens amid tight security today after 80 days' unscheduled closure following March 13 bloody clashes on the campus. All the 16 residential halls of the university were reopened on Saturday. Students entered their respective halls by showing identity cards and signing register books. Meanwhile, Police arrested two Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) men at Kathakali bus stand near the campus yesterday evening. The arrestees are Shibir Bangabandhu Hall unit President Shah Newaz Iftekhar Sachcho and activist Nazmul Hossain. They were arrested in connection with two cases filed by police with Motiher Police Station following May 23 violence in Binodpur area. Campus sources said around 500 law enforcers, including plainclothes police, have been deployed at different entry points of the RU. They also set up check posts at seven points to prevent outsiders' entry into the campus. Earlier on April 28, the academic council of the university decided to reopen the university on June 1 and halls on May 30. The authorities had earlier imposed restrictions on rallies, processions and activities of the student bodies on the campus for an indefinite period. Teachers, students, officials and employees of the university have been asked to keep their identity cards with them while they stay on the campus. Proctor Prof Zakaria also asked shop owners and guardians of the students of RU School and College to collect passes from his office. Besides, the visitors and outsiders have to sign register books before entering the campus.
