Agitated people assaulted the on-duty physician of the emergency ward of Dimla upazila Health Complex for his alleged negligence to a patient who died at the health complex on Saturday night. Noor Islam, 60, of Uttar Titpara village of the upazila, was brought to the health complex with severe cardiac complexity at about 11:00pm on Saturday, said sources at Dimla Upazila Health Complex and locals. Finding no one in the emergency ward, the patient's relatives kept him on the floor and looked for a physician. After about 30 minutes, emergency ward medical assistant Khorsed Alam reached there and provided primary treatment to the patient. He also arranged supplying oxygen to the patient as his condition was serious. As the patient's condition was deteriorating rapidly, the medical assistant called the physician of the emergency ward over cell phone. The patient's relatives alleged that the doctor was sleeping and so, he did not reach the spot timely although the medical assistant called him several times. The doctor finally came to the hospital at about 12:30am and after examining, he declared the patient dead. The patient's relatives blamed the physician's negligence for the death and started exchanging heated words with him. Hearing the hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot. They also alleged mismanagement and negligence of duty by some physicians of the health complex and assaulted the doctor and the medical assistant. The health complex authorities informed police who brought the situation under control. When contacted, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Deen Mohammad said the patient died as he had acute cardiac problem. Police was deployed on the health complex premises.
