Victim of gang rape, a housewife at Machdiar village in Daulatpur upazila under the district took her life on Sunday. Criminals tied physically challenged Harun Sardar to a tree and raped his wife Ranjana at about 8:30pm on Saturday, sources said. The gang left the scene leaving Ranjana unconscious, family sources said. After gaining sense on the night, Ranjana untied her husband. Locals said they did not know the incident instantly as Harun's house was at an isolated place of the village. As the news spread on Sunday, nearby people started thronging Harun's house and the thing turned unbearable for Ranjana as people started questioning her about the incident. She took poison in the evening and died at Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex at about 9:30pm. She was buried without post mortem on Monday. Later locals caught a rapist but local influential people belonging to the ruling party released him in the name of arbitration. When contacted, officials at Daulatpur Police Station said they had heard the news of a woman's suicide but nobody came to file any case. “If necessary we will investigate the incident,” Officer-in-Charge Hasan Hafiz said. The OC, however, did not say anything when asked why a person who committed suicide was buried without autopsy.
