At least 2,000 dwelling houses at 22 villages in Teknaf, Moheshkhali, Kutubdia, Pekua and Sadar upazilas of Cox's Bazar have been inundated by tidal surge of the Bay of Bengal. Seawater entering through the breaches in the coastal embankments has submerged dwellings of hundreds of people who also face serious crisis of drinking water. Many people have taken refuge at local cyclone shelters and on coastal embankments. Local met office sources said the sea has become rough under the impact of the depression formed in the Bay of Bengal. Tidal water has risen four to five feet above the normal and is hitting the coasts. Storm may hit the area. Cox's Bazar seacoast has been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 3. All fishing boats have been asked to stay near the coast until further order. President of Cox's Bazar Boat Owners Association Mujibur Rahman said at least 5,000 trawlers that went to fish in the deep sea have returned to ghats as the sea has become rough. 1,000 more trawlers will reach the ghats by this morning (Monday), he added. Hamidur Rahman, chairman of Sabrang Union Parishad under Teknaf upazila, said more than 100 dwelling houses of Jaliapra, Gholapara, Dakkhin Para, Paschim Para, Majhar Para under Shah Parir Dwip have gone under water due to the tidal surge. More than 500 people of these villages have taken shelter at different educational institutions and cyclone shelters. Chairman of Dhalghata Union Parishad under Moheshkhali upazila Moqbul Ahmed said cyclone Aila has washed away about two kilometre of flood embankment in the union. About 900 dwelling houses in five unions have been inundated as tidal water entered through the breaches of the embankment.
