Murders, bombings by outlaws yet to let up

Despite several anti-crime drives in the district there is no sign of any let up in killings and bomb attacks by the cadres of the Janajuddah faction of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP). Sources said outlawed parties have regrouped in Jhenidah Sadar upazila. Cadres openly move with arms in areas like Ganna Bazaar, Chandipur Bazar, Kuti Durgapur Bazar, Shoilmari Bazar and Pagla Kanai Road. They extort businessmen, contractors and other wealthy people residing in these areas. According to police and newspaper reports, at least 20 people were killed and five times bombs were exploded in the district in the last five months. In a recent incident on May 26, an outlaw's body was recovered from a field at village Hengerpara under Harinakundo upazila. Officer-in-charge (OC) Jahangir Alam of Harinakundo Police Station said, Asadul Islam Asha, 35, was a PBCP cadre. Son of Sadek Ali of village Bherakhali, he was a carpenter by profession. He might have been killed by his rival group over the murder of notorious Janajuddah cadre Heba Tagor on April 2, he said. SI Nazrul Islam said, Asha suddenly went missing and his body was recovered after four days. On May 20, the outlaws hacked to death Thandu Munshi, son of Nasiruddin of village Teltupi at a field at village Rahimpur of Harinakundo upazila. On April 28, Janajuddah cadre Siddiquer Rahman alias Biplob of village Defol Baria was killed in an encounter with police. On April 27, Enamul of Suti Durgapur village under Sadar upazila was slaughtered to death at village Jalalpur in Kotchandpur upazila. On April 23, the outlaws killed villager Rahit Kumar and looted all of his valuables from his house. On April 16, Abdul Gani was bombed to death by criminals at village Mirzapur under Jhenidah Sadar upazila. On April 15, two AL activists Azim Munsi and Kafil Uddin were murdered in a clash at village Bittidebi Rajnagar under Shailkupa upazila. On April 9, Tahaj Uddin Topu was hacked to death by outlaws at village Bhaina under Harinakundo upazila. On April 7, Ezahar Ali of village Brahmmapur under Shailkupa upazila was killed in a wheat field. On April 4, Hadu Mondol was murdered at village Singia under Kotchandpur upazila. On April 2, Shahidul Islam alias Heba Tagor was murdered by criminals at village Bherakhali under Harinakundo upazila. On March 26, Amena Begum and Beauty Khatun were strangled in Jhenidah Sadar. On March 23, Harun-or-Rashid of Moheshpur upazila was killed by an outlawed party gang. On March 20, police killed an outlaw Tater of village Putimari under Shailkupa upazila. On the same day, regional PBCP leader Shamsel Robin was also shot dead by police at Kotchandpur bus stand. On March 4, Sukumar Halder of village Rishkhali under Harinakundo upazila was hacked to death. The same day, Golam Kibria of Ashwasthali village was bombed to death by rival outlaws. Contacted, Additional Superintendent of Police Zobaer Hossain admitted that killings in Jhenidah have increased in the recent months. "We are planning a massive crackdown," he said adding that a drive was already on to curb criminal activities in the district.
