Aggrieved BNP leaders and activists yesterday brought out protest processions in Pabna, Chuadanga, Barisal and Barguna districts, rejecting the new convening committees. BNP men paraded the main streets of Pabna town yesterday demanding cancellation of the newly declared convening committee of Pabna district unit BNP, reports our correspondent. On Tuesday, the party central committee declared a seven-member convening committee of Pabna district unit BNP with Habibur Rahman Tota as convener and Major (retd) KS Mahmud, Toufique Habib, former lawmaker Salim Reza Habib, Abdullah Al Mahmud Mannan, advocate Masud Khandaker and Purnima Islam as joint conveners. Rejecting the new committee, BNP leaders and activists brought out a procession in the town on Tuesday night. The aggrieved party men again brought out a large procession from Pabna town hall premises yesterday noon. They paraded the main streets of the town and chanted slogans demanding cancellation of the new committee. The BNP activists burnt the effigy of Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, the personal assistant of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, in front of Pabna town hall premises. They declared Shimul Biswas and the new convening committee members unwanted in Pabna. At a press conference on the Pabna Press Club premises at about 1:00pm, speakers said most of the responsible leaders of the previous committee were left out as the new committee was formed ignoring the opinion of grass roots BNP leaders. Meanwhile, the leaders of the new convening committee said the party central committee formed the new body with dedicated workers to form a regular district unit committee. Our Kushtia Correspondent reports: Leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations in Chuadanga yesterday protested formation of the new convening committee of the district. They also declared new convenor Haji Mozammel Haq, a former lawmaker of Chuadanga-1, unwanted in the district. Mozammel had joined with 'reformists' group during the hard days of the party when party Chairperson Khaleda Zia was imprisoned, said local BNP leaders in a meeting held at district BNP office. Demanding immediate removal of Mozammel from the convening committee, they also declared fresh programmes including protest programme in every upazila today. Our Barisal Correspondent adds: A large number of BNP leaders and activists have rejected the newly announced Barisal district and city committees of the party. At a press conference in a restaurant in Barisal city yesterday afternoon, BNP leaders alleged that the Barisal district and city committees excluded dedicated leaders and included 'reformist' and 'controversial' persons. They warned of resignation if the announced committees are not reconstituted removing the 'reformists and opportunists'. District BNP Secretary Nazrul Islam Rajon read out a written statement at the conference. Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in Barguna district brought out a procession on Tuesday night protesting the announcement of district BNP committee with Matiur Rahman Talukdar as convener. They declared the new convenor persona non grata.
