BCL factions clash over CMC unit

At least eight activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chittagong Medical College unit and a doctor of the college were injured during a BCL factional clash over formation of a new committee on Tuesday night. Campus sources said the two factions--one led BCL CMC unit Convener Ripon Das and another by BCL leader Ridwanattacked each other when the college unit was holding a meeting over forming of a new body at the main male hostel in the city's Chatteswary Road at around 10:30pm. Both sides chased each other and used iron rods and hockey sticks during the clash They assaulted Dr Dhiman Barua, also a former leader of BCL CMC unit, when he tried to pacify them. Of the injured, Dr Dhiman and four BCL men-- Irfan, Faisal, Sunny and Limon-- were admitted to CMCH while the rest given first aid. Police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) brought the situation under control at around 2:00am. The law enforcers later arrested 13 BCL activists, three doctors and two interns at the hostel. The college authorities yesterday formed a four-member committee led by Vice- Principal Prof Amin Uddin A Khan to investigate the incident. CMC Principal Prof Gofranul Hoque said the situation is under control and police have been deployed on the CMC campus and the main hostel to avert any further untoward incident.
