<i>Police torture one to death for bribe</i>

An assistant sub inspector (ASI) of district Special Branch (SB) and his men tortured a person to death for failing to pay Tk 2,000 yesterday noon. ASI Harun ur Rashid along with 'informers' Waliur Rahman, Pentrol and Sumon in two motorbikes went to Abdul Hamid's Motir Bazar house in Dimla Upazila at noon, locals said. Terming Hamid as a 'ganja trader', the ASI demanded Tk 2,000 from him. As Hamid failed to meet the demand, Harun and his companions began to beat him mercilessly, leading to Hamid's death on the spot, locals said. Aggrieved locals detained Harun with a motorbike while his three accomplices managed to flee on another motorbike. Former local union parishad member Ohidul Islam said victim Hamid earned his livelihood by spraying insecticides in crop fields of the local farmers. Accused Harun was suspended following the incident, said the officer-in-charge of Dimla Police Station. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area as a tense situation is prevailing.
