Hospital room ransacked
Agitated relatives of a patient and slum dwellers yesterday brought out a procession and ransacked the conference room of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) protesting 'negligence' in treatment of a child accident victim.
Rupa, 8, daughter of Abul Kalam of KDC slum at Bandh Road was critically injured as she was hit by a running truck near her home yesterday. She was taken to the orthopedics department on the second floor of the hospital at about 2:30pm. However the child remained unattended by any doctor for about an hour despite repeated requests by her guardians, witnesses said.
At this, the relatives and slum dwellers became agitated and brought out a procession on the second floor of the hospital and at one stage ransacked the conference room and damaged name plates of the doctors there.
Police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Later, the local leaders settled the matter and doctors started treatment of the patient at about 4:30 in the afternoon.
Dr Abdul Khalek Shikdar, deputy director of SBMCH, said the treatment was delayed as the patient was brought to the hospital at the time of duty shift of doctors and staff.
