The Rajshahi University (RU) authorities yesterday stand-released two superintendents of Begum Rokeya Hall and removed four security guards of the hall for negligence of duty as female students went into angry demonstrations after thefts allegedly by a guard. A masked young man was seen on the second floor of Rokeya Hall early Tuesday while eight mobile phone sets, Tk 5,000 and valuable ornaments were stolen from different rooms of the female students' dormitory the same night, said the students who staged a sit-in in front of the administrative building. As the masked youth tried to take a mobile phone set through the window of Room No 305 on the second floor, inmates saw him, sources said. The female students shouted to inform the hall security guards who caught the youth red-handed to see that he is a hall security guard named Rezaul Karim. Around two hundred female students staged demonstration inside the hall and involved in a serious altercation with hall superintendents over the resident students' security. Later they brought out a protest procession on the campus and staged a sit-in in front of the administrative building to press home their five-point demand including immediate removal of responsible hall security guards, hall superintendents, compensation for stolen items, withdrawal of law enforcers from the hall gate and ensuring female students' security inside the hall.
