80 hurt as people of 2 villages clash

At least 80 people, including five policemen, were injured in a fierce clash between two groups of people belonging to two villages in Shahzadpur upazila yesterday morning. Police and locals said the trouble began at around 9:30am at Nagordala High School ground where two boys--Sukchand of Ratonkandi village and Habibur Rahman of Nagordala village--had an altercation over teasing a girl student. After a few minutes, over 100 villagers from Ratonkandi swooped on some villagers of Nagordala at Nagordala Bazar. Hearing the news, Nagordala people rushed to the spot and made a counter-attack, leading to a fierce clash between the two sides. They used lethal weapons and hurled brickbats at each other during the clash that continued for two hours. The clashing groups also damaged 25 shops at Nagordala Bazar and 20 houses in and around the bazar. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, fired tear gas shells and charged batons on the feuding groups to bring the situation under control. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahzadpur Police Station said five cops received injuries during the clash. Shop owners at Nagordala Bazar kept their shutters down fearing further clash. Police have been deployed there.
