New BNP Convening Committees
Aggrieved partymen in dists continue protests
Aggrieved BNP leaders and activists continue their agitation in different districts demanding cancellation of the newly formed convening committees.
Internal feud in different district units of the party surfaced anew after the central committee declared new convening bodies on June 9.
In Chuadanga, aggrieved BNP leaders and activists yesterday formed a human chain at Sahid Hasan Chattar in the town demanding cancellation of the newly declared district convening committee, according to our correspondent.
Leaders and activists of BNP district unit and front organisations joined the programme.
They later held a rally at the venue which was addressed, among others, by former district Mahila Dal president Roufunnahar Rina, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal district General Secretary Sarifuzzaman, BNP leaders Abdul Jabbar Sona and Mahfuza Parveen.
Our staff correspondent from Khulna adds: Leaders and activists of Bagerhat BNP have threatened movement and resignation en masse in case of failure by the party high command to exclude Dr Mian Abbasuddin from the new convening committee as he is an accused in a case for committing crimes as a collaborator of Pakistani occupation forces in 1971.
The threat came from a meeting of district BNP held on Wednesday evening in the party office in Bagerhat town. BNP leaders and activists also demanded expulsion of Abbasuddin branding him as war criminal.
In Khulna, BNP high command has finally dropped two joint convenors from newly formed district convening committee in the face of strong protest by local leaders and activists.
They are expelled president of Rupsha upazila BNP Monir Ahmed Rana and President of Dakop upazila unit of the party Apurbo Kumar Roy. They were among the 11 joint convenors of the new 12-member committee of Khulna district BNP formed on June 9 with Prof Majidul Islam as convenor.
Monir was expelled on February 29, 2006 for anti-party activities while Apurbo for his Indian citizenship as local leaders and activists alleged during recent demonstrations.
Our Rangamati correspondent says: Dipen Dewan has been made convenor of the district BNP. Dewan, a former district joint judge, also served as secretary of the CHT Land Commission. He is son of former advisor to the president Subimol Dewan, a popular leader of the indigenous community. Subimol was the founder president of Rangamati district BNP.
