Eight Jubo League, BCL men get life for killing Jubo Dal leader
A Barisal court yesterday awarded life sentence to eight Jubo League (JL) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for killing a Jubo Dal leader in Hizla upazila of the district in 2001.
The convicts are Shahjahan Chowkidar, Azam Khan, Zakir Hossain, Rokan Peyada, Shahjahan Khan Liton, Forkan, Ruhul Amin Shikdar and Harun Bepari. Of them, five are now in jail while the rest have been absconding since filing of the case.
District and Sessions Judge's Court also fined the convicts Tk 50, 000 each, in default, they are to suffer another year in jail. The court acquitted 16 of the 24 accused as charges brought against them were not proved.
According to the prosecution, the Jubo Dal and Chhatra League activists abducted Alauddin Khan, president of Jubo Dal Baraojalia Union unit, while he was going to Durgapur from Khunna Bandar of the upazila on the night of June 24, 2001. Alauddin's was found dead on Barojalia embankment the following day.
Mamtaz Begum, elder sister of the victim, lodged a murder case with Hizla Police Station the same day. Sub-Inspector (SI) Jamilur Rahman, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, pressed charges against 24 people on January 14, 2004.
